Graphic Novels, Video Games and Movie Adaptations

Given the fact that college started you probably should know that there will be little time for me to dally around any pathetic subject of my own choice (except for when I’ll be in the proper mood for that). So I was thinking to come up with a new post every weekend and hopefully not allow the blog to cool off and so the topic should be more or less relevant since there’s going to be a shortage of posting for now. And the subject which I had mind for this first weekend post has little to do with an optional course that buzzez around at the university. To put it simply I want to look at three rather important titles in terms of comic books that were “blessed” with movie adaptations and video game versions, which weren’t always of the quality you would expect them to be.

Batman: The Dark Knight

So as not to start off with the poorest title from my list of three let’s take a look at one of the series that actually did a pretty good work at adapting the graphich novel to the big screen. Batman has been filled with success for one hell of a long time and without a doubt, the latest franchise was one of the best parts of the whole character’s history. Also if we are to tie it to the video game industry we can say that the Batman Arkham series have also enjoyed quite an amount of positive feedback thus making the caped crusader one of the few graphic novel characters that can brag on having some decent movie and video game adaptations.

The Fantastic Four

No one can argue that the four fellas in blue overalls that fight crime on a galactic scale are not worthy of the superhero title, but without a doubt when you take the comic book and you manage to put together a fairly crappy movie, then make a sequel to it that’s just as awful as the first one and then finally transform it into a trilogy (3rd part seems to coming out in 2015) in an attempt to do something about the first two, then my friend you must be having a problem. Off course that one may argue just how bad things can get in this case and I should answer that things can get worse if some wise guys decide to also make a few games based on the crappy movies … Which they actually did … And surprise, surprise, those sucked too! Anyway I guess you can’t always make it, but hey there’s always the third part that might just wash off the pride of the series (or maybe I’m just trying to much to be an optimist, who knows).

Mortal Kombat

And here’s the reverse to the story as well. Take a video game that was based on virtually nothing and make some movies and comic books based on it, guess what comes out? Exactly! A bunch of bellow the sea level rated movies and some shitty graphic novels that contain an excess of interjections. Now I can understand that it’s quite hard to make a decent movie or a comic book from a game with little background story and a lot of fighting, but unless you can’t come up with something decet, just don’t do it! We honestly need no more second handed movies based on video games or grapich novels. But then again, we can always ignore those fails and only try to see the fairly decent parts of the whole franchise, such as the latest Mortal Kombat game in this case, but ou can be pretty sure that things can always get better if some inspired chap decides to make another sequel or prequel reboot type for that matter.

So to wrap up our petite discussions and draw some conclusions, if you can make something bautiful out of a fairly successful series by going into a different branch of the entertainment business with it, then by all means do so! Just look at Batman’s latest example if you’re unsure of how to to do it, but if you’re a no good low life talentless prick then please just go do something else, Florida does not want you, regardless o what your mama told you!
